I had the opportunity to speak to the students of Vista Del Mar, a school filled with the "forgotten ones". I am not writing this to pat myself on the back but moreso for you all to see what I wrote so you can expand upon it in your own way so that you also can go here or another place where disadvantaged kids need guidance and change their lives with your presence. That being said, here is my presentation outline.
. . . . . .
I want to thank Jayknee and the staff for inviting me and I appreciate you guys for your attention. I have a lot of things that I want to go over with you and give you so I'm going to do my best to stay on schedule I have a question for you guys. How would you describe greatness? Now, tell me what does greatness look like. I want you to look around the room. There is greatness in each of you. Now that you are aware of it, it's up to you to answer it's call. I'm making it a point to start off this way because no one told me that when I was your age. I had to spend many years figuring it out through trial and error. In fact, when I was your age, I was told many negative things and was promised things that ended up be fruitless lies. What I know to be true is that it all starts with you. Whether you have a great support system or not, you must make the choice to be better than your current self and situation. My family is from Compton, Watts, South Central and other parts of LA. I have seen friends and family be involved in things that I knew weren't for me. So, you might ask yourself how did a shy kid from Carson grow up to speak to thousands of people yearly on Nikes behalf, be a Nike Master trainer, travel the world, play D-1 college football and have the opportunity to meet and work with some of the worlds greatest athletes? In short my answer would be that I believed in me before anyone else did. What I'm going to do with you today is explore that idea further. I've had the opportunity to meet and work with some of the worlds greatest athletes spanning from the NBA, NFL, NHL,AVP, USATA, USWNT, USATF. Some of them are Serena Williams, Allyson Felix, Eric Nystrom, Rory McKilroy and many more. They all are great in different sports but the common thread between them is drive to be the greatest. One doesn't just wake up one day and become Michael Jordan or Muhammed Ali. To achieve that level of greatness there are many things that must happen. That's what my presentation today is about. I've highlighted a few words that all great athletes posses, demonstrate and use daily and how these word can make you realize your greatness as well. I have this piece of art at my house and it has some words that I'm forced to see everyday. Those words are to have faith, motivate, think positive, be honest, show kindness, encourage, believe in yourself, persevere, be patient, focus and do your best. <repeat the words>. Now, what's more captivating, the words or the art piece itself? I believe the artwork itself, the planning and attention to detail are just as important as the words that made me want to purchase it. Why, because if the plan wasn't in play the outcome could have never been possible. *Emphasize that starting bullet points because they get prizes later* •Make a plan >Commit to it •Have a championship mind set >you practice more than you play > play full speed •Think intelligently >active participation >this is your life and no one else's •Leaders are born and also made • Be humble •Serve your community •Have a purpose >Don't be fearful (refer back to purpose) >know your job •Love yourself >Love your brother/sister >Know yourself and find your place and your people •Inspiration comes from everywhere so be open •Take ownership of your actions >Be respectful but not timid •Never stop learning •Compete > Rise to the challenge >Execute •Don't be afraid to fail >no regrets •When it's your time be ready (Go over bullet points) *Finish with vision and visualizing What does your best life look like? Call to action: Set goals and write it down *Finishing thought* When it's your turn to speak to the world make sure you have something worth listening to. (Group pic)
